Current State of the 2020 Presidential Election

Current State of the 2020 Presidential Election

I wanted to give an overview of the current state of the election. Here is some polling that I found and it looks like Joe Biden is leading the race. Many political commentators believe it is because of an "electability" factor, meaning he could potentially win against President Trump.

Latest Polls in Early Voting States

Biden is also leading the polls among early voting states. These states are important in the political process not because of the number of electors that come from that state, but the media coverage candidates receive.

Here is a great Summary from The New York Times

"Here is the latest.

Sept. 6, 2019

The Democratic presidential primary is in a period of stability, though perhaps only a brief one ahead of the next debate on Thursday, Sept. 12. Joseph R. Biden Jr. remains the leading candidate, but he appears weaker now than on the day he entered the race. He has not gained any ground in the polls in more than a month.

Neither have almost any of Mr. Biden’s rivals: Elizabeth Warren has emerged as Mr. Biden’s strongest challenger, but her polling numbers only ticked up modestly in August. Bernie Sanders, is a close third, and Kamala Harris and Pete Buttigieg trail in the single digits. Support for all three has effectively remained flat during the same period.

The race will most likely get a jolt with the debate next week — the first time all the leading candidates will be gathered on one stage. It may be a particularly important moment in the Biden-Warren rivalry: The two have never appeared together in a debate, and the direct contrast could leave a lasting impression on Democratic voters.

It could also be an opportunity to stand out for several candidates who have made a positive first impression but who have not yet leaped in the polls — candidates like Cory Booker, Amy Klobuchar and Julián Castro.

But beneath the stability in the polls, there are other shifts in progress that may become more apparent in the coming weeks. Democratic voters and donors seem eager to rally around just a few candidates and rule out much of the party’s sprawling field. That urge to coalesce could yield some eye-opening fund-raising reports at the end of the month.

Even before then, a number of candidates have already begun bowing to their own political mortality. Since the middle of August, four candidates have dropped out: Kirsten Gillibrand, Jay Inslee, John Hickenlooper and Seth Moulton. Ten others have been excluded from the debate stage for lack of political support. For the candidates who have not managed to resonate yet, the opportunity to do so may well have expired."

  1. And even with all these options, I want more choices. This election has me concerned.
